Ali Can Metin "AC TURING" Online Solo Exhibition, 01 - 15 November 2026

As part of its solo exhibition series, the Marmara University Traditional Handicrafts and Design Application and Research Center (GESTUAM) is organizing an online solo exhibition titled AC‹TURING› by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Can Metin, a faculty member in the Department of Graphic Design, Faculty of Fine Arts, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University.

AC‹TURING› is an experimental display typeface based on modular repetition, inspired by the formation of patterns in nature. It takes its name from Alan Turing, the mathematician and one of the founders of modern computer science. In 1952, Turing developed a mathematical model showing that chemical substances, by interacting and diffusing at different rates, can produce regular patterns under certain conditions. Known as Turing patterns, these spotted, striped and interconnected formations form the conceptual starting point of the typeface. The idea that small differences and simple relationships can generate rich forms was adopted as the guiding principle in the construction of the letters.

An examination of the typeface’s anatomy reveals that its vertical and horizontal forms are joined through dots. These dots form the skeleton of each letter and guide the eye as it moves along the shape. While the connections build a different structure in each letter, the spaces left between them are as decisive as the strokes themselves, shaping the rhythm of the letters and the relationships they form with one another. The design seeks a balance between the organic movement evoked by the patterns and the legibility of each letter. Each letter has its own distinct posture, yet when set side by side, the letters join a shared texture.

The perception of AC‹TURING› shifts with viewing distance. Seen up close, a single letter reveals the repetition and connections of its modules; seen as a whole word, these modules read as a texture. The exhibition explores the possibilities of building an alphabet from the relationships that small units form with one another and invites visitors to discover their own visual connections by looking at the links, spaces and repetitions of the letters.
